Private Internet Access is headquartered in the United States — a Five Eyes member with broad federal surveillance capabilities and national security letter provisions that can compel companies to hand over data and prohibit them from disclosing the request. This creates legitimate concern for users with serious privacy requirements. However, PIA has a documented track record that deserves equal weight in this analysis.
PIA has been subpoenaed in US federal criminal investigations on at least two separate occasions — one involving a bomb threat case in 2015 and one in 2016. In both cases, federal prosecutors obtained PIA's records and found nothing, because the logs requested did not exist. These are not self-reported claims; they are matters of public court record. The FBI confirmed in court filings that PIA did not possess the connection metadata requested. For a US-based provider, this constitutes the strongest possible proof of a genuine no-logs architecture.
The 30,000 Server Network
PIA operates more than 30,000 servers across 91 countries — the largest network of any VPN we review. The sheer scale has practical implications: server load per node is dramatically lower than at competitors running 6,000–10,000 servers. This translates to more consistent speeds during peak hours, and better availability in less-served regions. In our tests, PIA maintained stable connections in locations where NordVPN and Surfshark occasionally had fully-loaded servers requiring manual location switching.
All PIA servers run on diskless RAM-only hardware. Physical seizure of a server yields nothing persistent — the operating system and all configuration data exist only in volatile memory.
Encryption Customization: Unique in the Consumer Market
PIA is the only mainstream consumer VPN that lets users meaningfully configure their own encryption parameters. Options include:
- Cipher: AES-128-GCM (faster, sufficient for most uses) or AES-256-GCM (maximum security)
- Handshake: RSA-2048, RSA-4096, or ECDH key exchange
- MACE: DNS-level malware, tracker, and ad blocker built directly into the VPN client — in our tests it reduced tracker requests per page by 71%
- Split tunneling: Per-application routing rules, including the ability to exclude specific apps from the VPN entirely
For most users, the defaults are fine. But for power users who want to tune the trade-off between encryption overhead and speed, this level of control is not available anywhere else at PIA's price point.
Speed Benchmarks
On WireGuard (PIA's default and recommended protocol), we measured 435 Mbps average download on a 500 Mbps baseline — 87% retention, placing it in the middle tier of our speed rankings. OpenVPN with AES-128-GCM adds approximately 15ms latency overhead versus WireGuard on the same server. The open-source clients on all platforms (Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android) are some of the most transparent in the industry — the full source code is available on GitHub and has been reviewed by independent researchers.
Streaming Performance
PIA unblocked Netflix US, UK, and Canada reliably in our tests. Hulu and Disney+ worked consistently. BBC iPlayer and Netflix Japan were less reliable, with success rates around 70–75% — lower than NordVPN or ExpressVPN on the same platforms. PIA is not the primary recommendation for heavy streaming users; its strengths lie in privacy, customization, and P2P rather than media unblocking.

PIA suits technically inclined users who want maximum configuration control, a proven no-logs track record, and the largest server network available — all at a price comparable to budget providers.
