NordVPN Review 2026

During our deep-dive audit of NordVPN, we found the infrastructure to be built around a custom WireGuard implementation called NordLynx, which wraps the protocol in a double-NAT system to strip metadata that could otherwise identify individual users. The cipher suite defaults to AES-256-GCM on OpenVPN connections and ChaCha20-Poly1305 under NordLynx—both with 4096-bit RSA handshakes and Perfect Forward Secrecy on every session. All 6,300 servers across 111 countries run on RAM-only hardware, independently audited by Deloitte in 2023 and 2024.

The Double VPN feature chains two geographically separated encrypted tunnels in sequence—your traffic is encrypted, sent to Server A in one country, re-encrypted with a second AES-256 key, then forwarded to Server B in a different country before reaching the open internet. Even if one server were compromised, the attacker would only see ciphertext destined for the second hop, with no ability to reconstruct the original session.
