How Netflix Detects and Blocks VPNs
Netflix operates one of the most sophisticated VPN detection systems of any streaming platform. Since 2016, when rights holders pressured Netflix to enforce geographic licensing, the platform has continuously evolved its blocking infrastructure. The current system operates on multiple layers: IP address range blocking (most data center IP ranges are on known block lists); ASN (Autonomous System Number) filtering (identifying traffic from known VPN provider networks); behavioral analysis (unusual patterns like rapid location changes or simultaneous logins from incompatible geographies); and DNS fingerprinting (VPN-provided DNS resolvers are identified and flagged).
The practical implication: a VPN that unblocked Netflix reliably in 2023 may not work in 2026 if Netflix has added its IP ranges to its block list. This is why you see significant variation in reported VPN Netflix success rates — the information decays quickly.
Our June 2026 Netflix Test Results
We tested 14 VPN providers across Netflix US, UK, Japan, Germany, and Australia. All tests were conducted from our London and New York test servers. "Unblocked" means the library content loaded without proxy error across three consecutive test days.
- NordVPN: 5/5 libraries unblocked. Consistent across 4 weeks of testing. SmartPlay routing is built into all connections.
- Surfshark: 5/5 libraries unblocked. Occasional single-day failures on US library, resolved within 24 hours by connecting to a different US server.
- ExpressVPN: 5/5 libraries. Most consistent of all tested providers — zero outages across the test period.
- ProtonVPN: 4/5 libraries (Japan failed). Solid for major markets.
- CyberGhost: Offers "streaming-optimized" servers labeled for Netflix specifically. 4/5 in our tests; Japanese library failed.
- IPVanish: 3/5. US and UK worked; other libraries unreliable.
- Mullvad: 2/5. Not designed for streaming; Netflix US and UK worked by luck of IP selection.
- Hide.me: 3/5. US library reliable; others hit-or-miss.
What Makes a VPN Reliably Unblock Netflix
The providers at the top of our list share three characteristics. First, they rotate their server IP addresses frequently — when Netflix blocks a batch of IPs, a new range is available within 24–48 hours. Second, they use obfuscated or "residential-adjacent" IPs on their streaming servers that are less easily fingerprinted as VPN data center blocks. Third, they have dedicated engineering teams specifically maintaining Netflix compatibility as an ongoing priority — this is not a configuration you set once.
NordVPN's SmartPlay technology automatically routes DNS requests through a separate Smart DNS layer that bypasses geographic content restrictions without requiring you to manually select a streaming server. This is why NordVPN tends to have the most consistent Netflix unblocking — it does not rely on the VPN IP itself being unblocked, only the DNS layer. Surfshark uses a similar SmartDNS approach.
Speed Matters for 4K Streaming
Netflix 4K Ultra HD requires approximately 25 Mbps sustained throughput. In practice, with buffering, short bursts above 50 Mbps are needed for a smooth experience. Any VPN in our top tier (NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN) delivers well above this threshold even on intercontinental server connections. The speed floor you need to worry about is when using mid-tier VPNs on servers far from your actual location — a US-to-Japan server hop on a lower-tier provider can drop below 30 Mbps, which causes buffering at 4K. Connect to the VPN server in the target library's country closest to your physical location for best streaming results.
Other Streaming Platforms
Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video use similar but slightly less aggressive blocking than Netflix. BBC iPlayer is the most aggressively geo-blocked UK service — only VPNs with UK residential or clean ISP IP ranges work reliably. In our tests, NordVPN and ExpressVPN maintained 100% iPlayer success; Surfshark had one 48-hour outage in April 2026 before IP rotation resolved it. For Hulu (US only), NordVPN and Surfshark both work; most others struggle.
Recommendation for Netflix Users in 2026
If Netflix unblocking is your primary criterion: NordVPN is the most consistent pick based on our multi-week testing. ExpressVPN is similarly reliable but costs slightly more. Surfshark is the best value option — slightly less consistent than the top two but close enough that most users will not notice. All three offer 30-day money-back guarantees, so test with your specific target libraries before committing long-term.
