During our deep-dive audit of PrivateVPN, the defining technical characteristic is its Stealth VPN mode, which tunnels OpenVPN traffic over an additional SSH (Secure Shell) or SOCKS5 layer to disguise it as standard encrypted terminal traffic. This approach is particularly effective against firewall rules in corporate or government-controlled networks where WireGuard and standard OpenVPN port signatures are blocked. The 200-server fleet across 63 countries is intentionally compact — each node runs on dedicated hardware (no virtual servers) with the company maintaining direct data centre contracts, giving them physical control over drive encryption and hardware-level access policies. Sweden's data retention framework exempts VPN providers from mandatory connection logging.

The port forwarding capability distinguishes PrivateVPN from most consumer VPNs: by requesting a specific inbound port from the VPN server, users can run servers, accept inbound P2P connections, or access home devices remotely without exposing their real IP address. The implementation maps the assigned forwarded port directly at the server's iptables layer, meaning the forwarded port persists across reconnections and survives IP address changes on the VPN server side — a level of stability that NAT-traversal-based implementations cannot guarantee.
