During our deep-dive audit of ExitLag, we found it operates on a fundamentally different model to conventional VPNs. Rather than routing all traffic through a single encrypted tunnel, ExitLag uses multi-path routing: it probes 3–5 candidate network paths between your location and the game server in real time, then selects and bondes the lowest-latency combination. The 180 server nodes are deliberately co-located near major game hosting regions — AWS us-east-1 (Riot, Blizzard), AWS eu-west-1 (EA, Ubisoft), and Tokyo/Seoul clusters (Nexon, NCsoft). Traffic is encrypted with AES-256 but the primary design goal is packet prioritisation and route stability, not anonymisation.
The FPS Boost Mode implements QoS (Quality of Service) tagging at the packet level, marking game traffic with DSCP EF (Expedited Forwarding) to ensure it is prioritised by intermediate routers over standard best-effort traffic. This is particularly effective on congested last-mile connections where ISP traffic shaping de-prioritises gaming UDP packets during peak hours.
